Here at Weelborg Chevrolet of Glencoe, to help do our part in participating, we’ve created this guide on everything you need to know about National Drive Electric Week.

What Is National Drive Electric Week?

National Drive Electric Week celebrates the impact of electric vehicles (EVs). Over 200 events are hosted nationwide to help spread awareness about the numerous benefits of all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more.

There is no shortage of EV events throughout the week, from parades, ride-and-drives, electric tailgate parties, and information booths. To find out which events are being hosted in your area, you can check out the Drive Electric website.

A Brief History of National Drive Electric Week

National Drive Electric Week started back in 2011 with the intent to provide free, helpful, and in-depth information for those considering purchasing an electric vehicle but didn’t know where to begin. In 2022 alone, EV sales in America were just shy of 1 million and over 10 million electric vehicles were sold globally, according to the International Energy Agency.

As more people warm up to electric vehicles, they often have questions about whether or not to make the switch. National Drive Electric Week gives people the opportunity to see what benefits there are to electric cars firsthand and interact with actual EV drivers.

What Are the Benefits of Electric Vehicles?

There are numerous benefits to picking an electric vehicle over traditional gas or diesel vehicles. There is a reason 90% of EV owners would most likely purchase another electric vehicle again for their new vehicle Some benefits include:

Better for Our Planet

One of the prominent advantages of driving an EV is the environmental impact. The majority of EVs have no tailpipe, which means they don’t emit any exhaust gases, reducing their contribution to air pollution, smog and greenhouse gases.

Lower Maintenance Costs

When compared to their gas or diesel counterparts, it’s cheaper to charge an electric car at home than to continuously fuel a tank. Full electric cars, trucks, and SUVs also cost less to maintain annually.

Instead of having to deal with the upkeep costs like oil changes, fluid flushes, top-ups, etc., of regular vehicles. EVs, on the other hand, only need very basic maintenance such as tire rotation, air filter changes, and a few others.

Better Driving Performance

EVs have more responsive acceleration. They are able to produce peak torque from an absolute standstill. They also have exceptional handling. Since they have a lower center of gravity, they provide superior weight distribution and stability.

EV Grants, Credits, and Rebates

To help encourage Americans to switch to electric vehicles, a few grants, rebates, and credits are available. The most substantial and well-known is the federal tax credit for battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This credit ranges from $2,500 to $7,500, depending on the battery capacity. It’s also worth checking out local rebates and incentives in your area.

Convenience Built-In

One of the best benefits of driving an EV is how convenient they are. Looking and searching for parking can be a thing of the past. You can often find free, priority, or dedicated parking bays for electric vehicles. Another benefit of EVs is how much quieter they are than gas and diesel vehicles.
