When purchasing a new car, many buyers are focused on the vehicle’s look, feel, and performance, and understandably so. The car-buying experience is an exciting one! At our Chevrolet Dealership in Glencoe, we want to help you leave with a vehicle that you love, and we are committed to helping you keep your investment safe and secure. Unfortunately, it’s easy to overlook the security features until a theft happens, and we’re left with filing an insurance claim to recover what’s been stolen.
The good news is, the following Chevy features will help in preventing this if equipped. Depending on the package, Advanced Theft Deterrent can protect your vehicle against break-in and prevent thieves from stealing your car, gas, and wheels. Take a look at the following security features.
1. Shielded, Battery-Backed Alarm Siren
A siren will sound when the alarm is triggered if any of the following happens:
- The car’s main battery is disconnected
- The siren is disconnected when the car’s alarm is activated
- The door, hood, or trunk is opened, or any other alarm-triggering event when the car is armed
Why you need it: This feature deters thieves and protects your car against a break-in even if they disconnect the main battery to silence the alarm. In addition, the siren is loud and distressing to alert you or others in the area of possible theft, a feature that’s especially advantageous in the middle of the night.
2. Door Lock and Latch Shields
Older cars are easy to break into because they don’t have this feature. Chevy’s Door Lock and Latch Shields make it difficult, if not impossible, for thieves to manipulate the door lock.
Why you need it: Effectively prevents break-ins.
3. Electric Fuel Filler Lock
Gas siphoning involves sucking gas through a tube or hose into a container. It’s the process thieves use to steal gas from parked cars which, unfortunately, is not uncommon. It’s often a quiet and sneaky operation left undetected until you turn your car on to see that your full tank of gas from the night before is now empty. The Electric Fuel Filler lock feature prevents this from happening. It locks the fuel filler when the vehicle doors are locked, making it difficult to access.
Why you need it: Protects your car from thieves stealing your gas.
4. Steering Column Lock
If a person can get through the Shielded, Battery-Backed Alarm Siren and the Door Lock and Latch Shields and can effectively turn your car on, the Steering Column Lock is automatically activated. It prevents anyone from driving, towing, or pushing the vehicle without a key fob.
Why you need it: An extra level of protection against car theft.
5. Vehicle Inclination Sensor
Car thieves are aware of security features that trip the alarm if a door is opened or the main battery is disconnected. One way to work around this is to lift the car to steal the wheels or tow the car to another location. The Vehicle Inclination Sensor prevents this from happening.
Why you need it: The Vehicle Inclination Sensor is self-levelling and will trigger the alarm if the vehicle tilt changes to deter thieves.
6. The Surround Vision Recorder
Cameras mounted on the vehicle are automatically activated when the alarm or other security features are triggered.
Why you need it: The Surround Vision Records records the scene around the vehicle and will help officials identify the thief when you file a report. It will also provide you with proof for the police and your insurance company, easing the process of filing a claim.
7. Interior Movement Sensor
Ultrasonic waves monitor the interior of the vehicle and trigger the alarm and Surround Vision Recorder.
Why you need it: If you’ve forgotten to lock the doors or someone was able to get into your car without a key, the Interior Movement Sensor can sense when someone enters your vehicle. It’s another intelligent level of protection against car theft.
8. Glass Breakage Sensor
The Glass Breakage Sensor is located in the rear quarter panel and liftgate windows and triggers the Surround Vision Recorder should someone attempt to break the glass.
Why you need it: Some security features on other vehicle makes and models only activate the alarm when the door is opened. To get around the alarm, a common entryway for thieves is the rear cargo area. The Glass Breakage Sensors are filaments within the glass that, when broken, will activate the alarm.
